90% of all the world’s data has been produced in the past two years

Learn about the global rise of big data, and how you can take advantage of it to succeed at your job and grow your business.

grey_Operations.pngWelcome to the Big Data Revolution. Data now streams from daily life: from phones and credit cards to computers and sensor-equipped buildings.  In 2013, IBM released some numbers pointing to the fact that 90% of ALL of the world’s data has been produced in the past TWO years (and we’re confident to assume that it has since grown even higher.)  The exponential growth of online data can largely be attributed to the advent and maturing of social media, analytics platforms and the ongoing move of mobile tech from analog to digital technologies.  “There is a big data revolution,” says Weatherhead University Professor Gary King.  But it is not the quantity of data that is revolutionary. “The big data revolution is that now we can do something with the data.”

This growth in data is also aided by modern database technologies like NoSQL which enable faster querying and advanced sorting and operations programming techniques (map reduce) like Hadoop.

Beyond that, more than ⅓ of the 7.9 Zetabytes of data produced will live in or pass through the cloud, according to CSC.

How to Make Sense Of Your Data

The interesting question becomes, now that we’re in a “big data revolution”, what does that mean to you and your company and how can you use this large volume of data to your advantage?  IBM states that companies leveraging big data in their decision making are over two times more likely to “substantially outperform their industry peers.”

In fact, data can drive a plethora of real-time, actionable business decisions, whether they be made from the chief seats, or from marketing, sales, finance, so on and so forth.  But the problem is that “the average company uses five to nine different SaaS solutions, and this has doubled from just a few years ago.  SaaS companies are regularly losing sales due to a missing integration, and the number of (business apps) they need to integrate… is growing exponentially”, says Graham Brooks of .406 Ventures.  Bedrock Data solves that problem by automatically updating, transferring and syncing data between these systems and dozens more.

Fun fact: “By 2017, CMOs will Spend more on IT than CIOs” - Forbes.com (the reality is that many already do)

Next up, I will be writing a blog post about the 5 ways your company can take advantage of big data without breaking the bank, but if you don’t want to wait for the post, you can learn the 5 five ways through our e-book, An Intro to Data Management: How to Use Data to Succeed at your Job.

The e-book will also teach you how to run successful data projects in your job, and learn how to properly integrate your data so that it stays in sync and accurate across your business.
